International Women’s Day marked across Eritrea

Asmara, 8 March 2010 – International Women’s Day was marked today across the nation under the theme: “Double Struggle for Strengthening National Resolute Rebuff.”

Speaking at the celebrations held in the Central region in which a number of Government officials and thousands of citizens took part, the head of NUEW branch in the region, Ms. Tek’a, Tesfamichael, highlighted the unparalleled contribution and heroism Eritrea women manifested both in the achievement of independence and safeguarding the nation’s sovereignty. Now too, Eritrean women are ready to play exemplary role, she added.

About 384 female students from 3 sub-zones of the region who scored 90 and above marks in the national exams for Grade 8 were awarded prizes on the occasion, while various poems and songs highlighting the event were featured.

Also at the celebrations held in Gash-Barka region, the Secretary of the PFDJ in the region, Mr. Rezene Adonai, said that the Day plays significant role in assessing the weak and strong sides of the struggle waged by women to ensure their rights. In this connection, he explained that the Front would enhance efforts to raise all-round awareness of women, as part of endeavors to guarantee their rights and equality. 

Similarly, at the celebrations in Anseba region, the head of the NUEW branch in the region, Ms. Alem Belai, explained that this year’s International Women’s Day is special as it is being held at a time when Eritrean nationals inside the country and abroad are strengthening the national resolute rebuff with a view to foiling the US-engineered unjust and vicious sanctions resolution. He went on to say that Eritrean women in the region are taking concerted action through strengthening organizational capacity for the success of the national resolute rebuff.

Likewise, Eritrean women in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, marked March 8 in a colorful manner, according to reports.  The Chairperson of NUEW branch in Jeddah, Ms. Saba Sebhatu, expressed the readiness of members of the Union for the success of the national resolute rebuff. She also called on them to make enhanced contribution for the finalization of the construction of the NUEW Office and Training Center building complex in Elabered.
