Operation Red Star offensive (Feb 1982): After a month-long bombing campaign, over 120,000 Derg troops threw themselves at the EPLF stronghold in the Sahel mountains. Supported by new Soviet tanks, helicopter gunships and Katyusha rocket launcher trucks, they should have been unstoppable. But EPLF fighters held their ground and after three months of fighting, they inflicted tens of thousands of casualties to the invading army.


20th Anniversary of the Annihilation of Derg's Nadew Command
By the end of the three-day battle 18,000 enemy soldiers had been killed or captured. This victory of the EPLF over the Nadew Command is considered by the historian Basil Davidson to be the most significant victory for any liberation movement since the Vietnamese victory at Dien Bien Phu. Another important consequence was the capture of three Soviet military advisers (a fourth was killed in combat action). 50 Tanks captured, 200 Trucks, 80 Anti-Aircraft, 122mm Artillery, for the first time 130mm Artillery & BM 21 Rockets captured, more...
