Eritrea: Hardly Any Other Country is Discussed as Often in Switzerland

Eritrea will be the subject of the Council of States twice on December 5th. In a motion, the SVP calls for the opening of a Swiss embassy in Eritrea. This would be in the interest of Switzerland because it would allow them to assess the situation on the spot firsthand. In a second motion, SP National Councilor Manuel Tornare demands that Switzerland should increasingly support the UN in its efforts to improve the situation in Eritrea. The National Council has accepted both motions. They are now at the Council of States.

Why Eritrea keeps the Swiss politics busy and why the positions on the human rights situation in the country so far apart, explains NZZ video editor Stefanie Hasler.
