Erie Commodores FC head coach John Melody wasn’t ready to proclaim the return of the franchise’s glory days.

It was too early for that, but not for the bold prediction he made at halftime of his club’s 2-0 National Premier Soccer League win against the previously unbeaten and division-leading Dayton Dynamo on Friday at Gannon University’s McConnell Family Stadium.
“Coach literally told me I was going to score two goals,” striker Ezana Kahsay said after scoring twice in a four-minute span of the second half to break open a tight defensive battle.

Kahsay, a University of Akron product by way of the northeast African nation of Eritrea, believed Melody, because he said Melody “had the confidence in me to score those two goals. He gave me a chance.”

First, Kahsay used his 6-foot 2-inch frame to outleap Dynamo goalkeeper Ryan Hulings and send a header into an open net to give the Commodores (2-0-1) the lead for good in the 67th minute. Erie has matched its win total from the 2016 season.

Then Kahsay used his strength and skill to beat two defenders to Commodores goalkeeper Jorge Prendes’ length-of-the-field pass, and slip a back-heeled shot past Hulings for the insurance goal in the 71st minute.

“Three games in, we’re (taking) the right steps,” Kahsay said. “Beating those teams, that just gives us another boost for our confidence. We know we can play. We know we’re a good team. We just have to show it. That’s what we did tonight.”
