A rapist who attacked a woman in the street, less than a minute from her boyfriend’s house, deserved every day of his 10-year jail term, top judges have ruled.

Birmingham man, Mebrahtom Abrha, 26, was living in Liverpool when he attacked his victim and raped her twice.

She was headed back to her boyfriend’s home in Toxteth following a night out with friends, London’s Appeal Court heard today.

Abrha, of Dunsink Road, Aston, was linked to the crimes following a BBC Crimewatch appeal.

Matching DNA created “overwhelming evidence” against him and he pleaded guilty to two counts of rape at Liverpool Crown Court in January.

As a “dangerous” offender, Abrha was ordered to serve five extra years on licence after his 10-year prison sentence expired.

Today he tried to persuade top judges at London’s Criminal Appeal Court that his sentence was too harsh.

Lord Justice Treacy, Mr Justice Singh, and Judge Alastair McCreath, heard that the victim had been partying with friends on the night of the attack.

She decided to walk a mile and a half to her boyfriend’s home after being unable to find a taxi, the court heard.

Abrha had been in nightclubs, “dancing by himself”, in Concert Square until the early hours.

He followed his victim for some distance before pouncing when she was “less than 100m from her destination.”

He sexually molested and raped her on the pavement.

He then “walked away in a casual manner” whilst she hysterically ran to get help.

The victim had been left with “huge psychological scars” by her ordeal, Mr Justice Singh said.

His lawyers today argued that he ought to have been given a full one third discount off his sentence for pleading guilty.

But Mr Justice Singh said the DNA evidence was “overwhelming” and he didn’t have any real choice but to admit his crimes.

The appeal judge concluded: “This appeal against sentence must be dismissed.”
