Nigisti Gebremedhin Arrested for Shooting Mekonen Berhe and for an Attempted Murder

Police arrested a Garden City, Kansas woman Friday on an allegation of attempted first-degree murder, saying she allegedly shot a man in the arm at their home.

According to Garden City police, officers were en route to 305 Fleming St., Apt. 3, at about 9:48 a.m. in response to a call about a fight, when they received another call about a shot being fired.

When officers arrived, they found Mekonen Berhe-Gebrehiwet, 30, 305 Fleming St., with a gunshot wound to his arm. Finney County EMS took Berhe-Gebrehiwet to St. Catherine Hospital, where he was treated and released.

Police then arrested Nigisti Gebremedhin Beyene, 29, also of 305 Fleming St.

Police say Berhe-Gebrehiwet and Beyene were romantically involved and lived at the apartment together. According to police, an argument ensued over a possible breakup, at which point Beyene allegedly pulled a handgun on Berhe-Gebrehiwet and fired at him, hitting him in the arm.
