A trial is set to begin today for a man accused in the deadly stabbing of a woman in a downtown Toronto laneway nearly three years ago.

Adonay Zekarias, who was 42-years-old at the time of his arrest, is charged with first degree murder in the death of 55-year-old Nighisti Semret.

Investigators have said Semret was killed as she walked down a Cabbagetown laneway, connecting Bleecker Street and Ontario Street, following a night shift a nearby hotel.

Police had said her attacker used a 20-centimetre kitchen-style knife and was himself badly injured in the incident.

At the time, police said the woman was stabbed from behind.

Semret, a refugee from Eritrea, was a mother of three.
