Tel Aviv police have arrested a suspect in the fatal stabbing of an Eritrean man in south Tel Aviv earlier this month.

The suspect is a 27-year-old Israeli Arab man from Ramle. He was found after police were able to trace the taxi cab that was seen fleeing from the scene after the stabbing, which he rents.

The victim, aged 24, was seen by witnesses in the earlier hours of January 17 on Hamasger Street in south Tel Aviv, a popular nightclub district where fights and stabbings are common weekend events. Witnesses told police they saw a taxi cab stop next to the victim and that a number of Arabic-speaking men got out and stabbed the man, before fleeing in the vehicle.

Tel Aviv police said Thursday they expect further arrests to come soon in the murder, as they link the suspect they now have in custody to other possible accomplices. A spokesman for the Tel Aviv police said they believe that the murder happened for trivial purposes, possibly as the result of a random argument or altercation, and that there was no racial element.
