Official ceremony of 30th anniversary of Wiqaw Izz’s demise conducted with patriotic zeal
Mahmime, 22 March 2014 – The official ceremony of 30th anniversary of Wiqaw Izz’s demise was conducted with patriotic zeal today in the presence of President Isaias Afwerki, senior government and PFDJ officials and numerous nationals from inside the country and abroad.
Speaking at the event which was broadcast live through Eri-TV and Dimtsi-Hafash witnessing various cultural as well as artistic performances, President Isaias called on enthusiasts of history of the armed struggle in general and that of Wiqaw Izz in particular to popularize the heroic feats demonstrated thereof along with the freedom fighters’ spirit of perseverance, creativity and self-sacrifice.
He further called for persistent dissemination activities in connection with events marking such historical events, besides continued follow-up of the memorials built to this end. The President went on to laud those who made outstanding contributions in organizing the event, and praised the fallen heroes who fell during the battle engagements of Wiqaw Izz.
Also speaking on the occasion, Ms. Tsigereda Woldegiorgis, Administrator of the Northern Red Sea region, noted the vitality of marking the historical event on its ground of occurrence, and that it shoulders the responsibility of bequeathing national values taking the event as an opportunity.
Likewise, Mr. Siraj Haj, Chairman of the event’s organizing committee, pointed out that the demise of Wiqaw Izz constituted the stepping stone to major military offenses on the part of the EPLF, and thus giving rise to the liberation of Eritrea. He also lauded all government bodies that made higher contribution in organizing the event.
Moreover, briefings were given by veteran fighters who took part in the historical battle engagement to the participants of the event focusing on the heroic feats demonstrated then. (Shabait)
